It breaks our heart to turn someone away who is suffering from a life-threatening illness. If you do not qualify for 17 Strong, we’ve created a list of other organizations that might be able to provide assistance.
Wish-Granting Organizations
Make-A-Wish Tri-Counties
Granting wishes to children ages 2-17 diagnosed with a critical illness in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Email pmullins@tri-counties.wish.org for more info.
Children’s Wish Foundation International
Granting wishes to children under the age of 18 who have battled a life-threatening illness. They serve children around the world.
Dream Foundation
Serving terminally-ill adults (18 & older) and their families by providing end-of-life Dreams that offer inspiration, comfort and closure. Must be diagnosed with a life limiting illness with a life expectancy of 12 months or less, and lack the resources to fulfill the Dream themselves.
Nikolas Ritschel Foundation
Grants wishes young adults ages 18-24 battling a life-threatening illness. They can be during treatment, after treatment or a last wish. They serve young adults nationwide.
Kids Wish Network
Grants wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 18 who are in the fight of their lives, battling a life threatening medical condition. They serve kids nationwide.
Dream Makers SLO
Grants wishes to create meaning and memories for terminally ill adults and their families. This is only for U.S. residents and is limited to travel within the country.
Financial Assistance
Along Comes Hope
Provide support through financial assistance with travel for treatment, creative emotional support programs and advocacy to promote policy changes, awareness and education.
Jack’s Helping Hand
Provide financial support, programs and resources to support families and children in times of crisis (cancer, special needs) under the age of 21 residing in San Luis Obispo County.
Other Resources
Cancer Fitness Program
Avila Beach Athletic Club Cancer Well-fit is a free, small group, ten-week exercise program designed to help the first-year cancer survivor build muscle, improve self-esteem and develop a fitness program to continue a healthy lifestyle.
Knowing You Matter
Knowing You Matter provides support to those affected by suicide whether it be someone considering suicide, someone who has survived an attempt, or those affected by a loss due to suicide.
Mental Health and Mesothelioma
A mesothelioma diagnosis can affect mental health. Many patients in cancer treatment struggle with depressed mood and anxiety. Mental health issues do not cause cancer, but help is available if cancer is making life harder and more stressful.
